EYE MICROSURGERY DEPARTMENT

The Eye Microsurgery Department was opened as the Republican Center of Vitreoretinal Surgery. The equipping by diagnostic and surgical facilities was carried out according to the given concept of vitreous body and retina diagnostics and treatment.

Hi-tech equipment and professional doctors can provide examinations and operations at patients of any age previously not performed in the Republic of Belarus.

The Department renders diagnostic and medical help to patients on the following pathology:

  • Vascular opthalmopathology (including hemophthalm and diabetic retinopathy) requiring microsurgical and laser intervention;
  • Diabetes, cardiovascular system diseases , cerebrovascular diseases, syndromal and hereditary pathology, collagenosis and others, resulting in hemophthalms, rough vitreal and vitreoretinal destruction with the subsequent proliferation and traction retinal detachment;
  • Congenital and youthful glaucomas;
  • Congenital and complicated cataracts requiring removal of cataracts by open and closed method using ultrasound (phacoemulsification) and modern ocuthoms with one-stage implantation of artificial lenses of various models at absence of contra-indications to implantation;
  • Implantation of artificial lenses into aphakic eye;
  • Removal of the complicated cataracts in combination with vitroectomy;
  • Removal of dislocated lenses;
  • The consequences of traumas requiring modern hi-tech microsurgical medical rehabilitation. Removal of foreign bodies impacted into retina with endolasercoagulation;
  • Retinopathy of the prematurely born (vitrectomy with endolasercoagulation, cryopecia);
  • Retinas detachments including with rough vitreal and vitreoretinal destruction, with subsequent proliferation.

  • The diagnostic examinations provided in the department:

  • Autokeratometry and autorefractometry (by autokeratorefractometer ARK - 730 And Nidek (Japan));
  • Visometry (performed by automatic phoropter RT-2100 Nidek;
  • Perimetry;
  • Quantum threshold perimetry by perimeter Humphrey Field Analyzer - 740i Zeiss. (Germany);
  • Contactless pneumotonometry (Japan) y pneumotonometer NT 2000 Nidek;
  • Contact tonometry;
  • An optical scanning tomography of retina and an optic nerve by device OCT Stratus 3000 (Germany).

  • Note: The Department is a pioneer in the Republic of Belarus on the given method of examination - for the period from 2004 till present there were performed 3376 examinations.

  • Ultrasonic biometry OTI-scan US-3300 (Canada);
  • Ultrasonic three-dimensional scanning by device OTI-scan US-3300 (Canada).

  • Note: We are pioneers in the Republic of Belarus on the given method of examination - for the period from 2004 till present there were performed 8167 examinations.

  • Definition of a threshold of retina electric sensitivity and lability of an optic nerve;
  • Electrophysiological examination Neuro MBP (Russia);
  • Detailed examination of eye grounds and fluorescent angiography is performed by device Visucam Lite Zeiss (Germany), there were provided 199 fluorescent angiographies. The system can video archive providing video information for a patient;
  • Corneotopography TMS - 4 TOMEY (Japan);
  • Biomicroscopy. (performed by slit lamp Zeiss 130 SL.( Germany);
  • Indirect inverse ophthalmoscopy and binocular ophthalmoscopy by ophthalmoscope Heine HK 150-2 Multi FL (Germany);
  • Fundusscopy with video registration by device RetCam;
  • We can provide the examination of newborns at suspicion of eye grounds pathology by retinal pediatric system RetCam (Canada) without application of narcosis. The given method is used for examination of children with retinopathy of the prematurely born. The system can video archive providing video information for a patient.

  • The department performs operative interventions to adults and children at various diseases of sight organ except for patients with acute trauma.

    Hi-tech operations are applied in the department using the technologies applied in leading clinics of Russia, Germany, and Italy at:

  • Retina and vitreous body pathology of various genesis (vitrectomy, vitreoshvartectomy, hemophthalmectomy, lensevitrectomy, removal of epiretinal membranes, endosurgery of detachments with introduction of perfluororganic connections) by endolasercoagulation of retina, replacement of perfluororganic connections for silicone fluid;
  • Cataract (the surgery corresponds to world Protocols: surgery of "small" cuts - ultrasonic phacoemulsification and mechanical phacofragmentation through self-hermetic "small" cut with implantation of intraocular lens;
  • Retinopathy of the prematurely born (laser coagulation at early stages and vireoretinal surgery of late stages of disease);
  • Consequences of the traumas requiring current hi-tech microsurgical medical rehabilitation: removal of alien bodies impacted into retina with endolasercoagulation;
  • Ophthalmopathology of anterior and posterior eye sections requiring performing of laser surgery in treatment (glaucoma, secondary filmy cataract, diabetic retinopathy, retina dystrophy, thromboses of retinal vessels, initial forms of retina detachment). Techniques of laser surgery also correspond to current world technologies and are performed by hi-tech laser equipment.

  • The improvement of the technologies at diagnostics and operative treatment of retinopathies at the prematurely born is continued. Purchasing and putting into operation of the retinal pediatric system allowed expanding the diagnostic scope at the given pathology. In 2006 there was implemented transpupillary laser surgery of retinopathies of the prematurely born in 1-2 stages. The department at present is the only one department in Belarus where laser surgery of retinopathies of the prematurely born is carried out including also vitreoretinal surgery of the given pathology with application of perfluororganic connections. The minimal age of the operated patients made up 3 weeks, the minimal weight - 2 kg 200g.

    The foreign citizens can obtain the given diagnostic methods of examination and operative treatment as a paid service.

    The department is a clinical base for Ophthalmology Faculty of the Gomel Medical University. The clinical base involves highly skilled experts using the best practice of CIS and foreign leading clinics. Besides the clinical base has the modern computer office equipment allowing to optimize teaching-pedagogical process, video documentation of research and operations which are of great interest among students, clinical interns of Belarus, foreign specialists, employees of the Center.
