The scientists and experts of the Republican Research Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology provide close cooperation with the experts of various research institutions from close and distant foreign countries on overcoming the medical consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe.

The Aim: organizational, informational, methodical and advisory provision of the international activity of the Center assisting to strengthening of the scientific potential.


  • Establishment and development of effective mutually beneficial partner connections with world leading scientific and educational institutions, preparation of bilateral and multilateral programs of cooperation in the field of science and practical public health care;
  • Participation in the international projects and programs;
  • Arranging of the international research conferences, symposiums, seminars, exhibitions on the base of the Center;
  • Experience exchange, participation in internships and training abroad;
  • Invitation of highly qualified foreign experts to the Center for providing joint scientific research, consultations, lecturing, rendering methodical help to improve Public Health Care structure;
  • Elaboration of programs and plans on scientific collaboration with other institutions and organizations taking into account the international experience;
  • Analysis, summarizing and distribution of the information on international activity issues based on present-day methods and means of communication;
  • Searching for potential foreign partners to attract new technologies and investments into the Center including possible distribution of developments of the Center outside Belarus.

  • There were signed the agreements on research and scientific technical cooperation with the following institutions:

  • The Federal State Institution of Science ‘ St.-Petersburg Research Institute of Radiation Hygiene named after professor P.V.Ramzaev’;
  • Federal State Institution ‘ State Research Center of Social and Judicial Psychiatry named after V.P.Serbsky of the Federal Agency on Health Care and Social Development’;
  • Obninsk Research Center of Social - Psychological Technologies ‘Prognosis’ (Russian Federation);

  • There were prepared the agreements on cooperation directed on improvement of collaboration and coordination of activity using scientific and pedagogical potential between RRCRM & HE and Medical Universities of Akita and Nagasaki (Japan), and Pisa Medical University (Italy).

  • International Projects:

    1. The program of joint activity on overcoming consequences of the Chernobyl accident within the framework of the Union State per 2006-2010.

    The main aim of the state program: social, economic and radio-ecological rehabilitation of the contaminated territories, creation of conditions for providing economic activity without restrictions under the radiation factor and further decrease of risk for health. Among the priorities on scientific support of the State program regarding minimization of the medical consequences of the accident there were defined the following measures including:

  • Implementation of the scientific findings into practical health care aiming to decrease the Chernobyl consequences effect on population health;
  • Organization of the specialized medical care on the basis of the Health Care organizations providing them necessary material base and qualified personnel ;
  • Prophylactic medical examination of the Chernobyl-affected population ;
  • Early diagnostics and treatment of pretumor diseases aiming to prevent malignant tumours;
  • Development of the Belarusian State Registry of the Chernobyl-affected population.

  • In 2007 within the framework of the implementation of the State program there were carried out the following tasks:

  • To estimate radiation risk of oncological and non-oncological diseases development among the Chernobyl-affected population of Belarus;
  • To provide dosimetric support of epidemiological studies according to risk of development of oncological and non-oncological diseases;
  • To study the features of clinical course and to develop the prediction of treatment results of patients with thyroid cancer in Belarus after the Chernobyl accident;
  • To develop the method of estimation of diagnostic x-ray irradiation input into the accumulated dose at combination of gamma - irradiation on teeth enamel;
  • Estimation of hemoblastosis incidence and death rate from the given pathology at the Chernobyl-affected population of Belarus.

  • There was performed the following activity within the framework of the state program implementation:

  • Elaboration of the technique on reconstruction of the absorbed dose in a lens for providing radiation-epidemiological research. The technique allows restoring a dose absorbed by the lens on the basis of modeling of processes and radiated spectrum in the air environment and human tissue;
  • Working out and implementation of methods on diagnostics and treatment of thyroid cancer. The obtained results allow reducing probability of occurrence of postoperative complications and local relapses at operations concerning thyroid cancer by 5-6 %. By the results of the performed studies there were obtained 4 patents for inventions and the instruction on diagnostics methods application.
  • Development of the base variant of the technique on reconstruction of the individual accumulated effective doses at liquidators and population for providing radiation-epidemiological study based on the generated base of the ecological and dosimetric data. The technique will form a basis for dose filling of the Belarus State Registry.
  • Estimation of hemoblastosis incidence and death rate from the given pathology at various categories of the Chernobyl-affected Belarus population. It is established that standardized parameters of death rate from hemoblastosis among liquidators authentically are higher than those among the population of control Vitebsk Oblast. The highest parameter of death rate from hemoblastosis among the liquidators of the Republic was marked during the period of 2000-2006 and was caused, first of all, by growth of death rate from leucosis chronic forms and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Among children population referred to group 5 of the primary account, the parameters of death rate from hemoblastosis were below the similar parameters in the control group. The obtained results will form the base for providing appropriate activity on rendering address medical aid.
  • Elaboration and publishing of ‘ Oncological Incidence Atlas in Belarus’ per 1978-2005’ ;
  • Publishing of 2 statistical collections: ‘Health Status of Belarus Population according to the Belarus State Registry of the Chernobyl-affected population 1994-2005’ and ‘Health Status of Belarus Population according to the Belarus State Registry of the Chernobyl-affected population 1995-2006’.
  • All above information allowed developing a project of new Regulations concerning special prophylactic medical examination of the Chernobyl-affected population.

    Introduction of new approaches in prophylactic medical examination of the Chernobyl-affected population; highly technological methods of diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation will allow to increase life expectancy of various categories of the affected population by 1 - 1,5 years, to improve life quality, to decrease incidence rate by basic nosologic units, and, accordingly, disability of population. Finally the specified activity can bring economic benefit of approximately 1 billion rubles per year according to the clinic-economic analysis.

    2. ‘Belarusian-American scientific Protocol on Study of Thyroid Gland and Other Thyroid Diseases in Belarus after the Chernobyl Accident’ (USA) is implemented since 1994. The partners of the project from the American side include:

  • National Cancer Institute and the Columbia University;

  • The main organization - participant of the Report from the Belarus side:

  • the Republican Research Center of Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology.

  • Additional organizations – participants:

  • Belarus Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (dosimetry group, Minsk);
  • The Republican Center of Medical Rehabilitation and Balneology (Stationary Screening Team , Minsk);
  • The Republican Center of Thyroid Pathology (Minsk).

  • The project is a scientific - methodical basis for performance of the program on joint cooperation of Belarus and American experts on studying of thyroid cancer and other thyroid diseases in Belarus after the Chernobyl accident. There was formed the cohort consisting of 11969 people who were 0-18 years of old at the moment of the accident. At present the scientific analysis of the obtained results of the research is being performed and scientific publications are being prepared. The performed research will allow calculating the risk of thyroid cancer development and its possible connection with post accident irradiation.

    3. The project “Providing Screening for the Affected Population within the Limits of the International Chernobyl Program of the Red Cross” is implemented since 2003.

    The partner of the project: the International Federation of the Red Cross.

    The aim of the project: examination of health status of the affected population of Belarus. The support of mobile diagnostic teams is carried out within the framework of the project. The analysis of work of mobile diagnostic teams during recent years showed high efficiency of this activity, especially at diagnostics of thyroid pathology including thyroid cancer.

    The thematic project within the framework of CORE program ‘Quality of Health: Contribution into Risk Decrease’ is implemented in cooperation with the International organization ‘Doctors of the World ‘and the Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety of France.

    The primary goal of the research: providing joint examination of health status of children of Chechersk region aged 3-15 aiming to reduce radiation risk in the contaminated territories.

    4. Improvement of the Unified State System on Control and Account of Exposure Doses ( IAEA)

    It is implemented in cooperation with IAEA .The strategy of activity under the project includes estimation of the existing Dosimetry Registry , development of software for calculation of doses obtained from natural radionuclides and medical examinations effect : renewal of the equipment of the State Dosimetry Registry and the regional centers of control and account of exposure doses ; organization of training for employees of the State Dosimetry Registry and the regional centers on control and account of exposure doses. To date there was purchased the computer equipment for the State Dosimetry Registry and the regional centers. The employee of the Center participated at the meeting which was arranged in Vienna on project implementation issues and elaboration of work plan per 2008.

    5. The project ‘Children of Chernobyl’.

    Cooperation with the organization ‘Project-Children of Chernobyl’ from Great Britain on providing practical help to sick children with Type 1 diabetes. Under the given project there was planned the purchasing of reagents. During project implementation there were obtained the reagents for the sum 20.000 $ (USA).

    6. “Psychosocial Service for Children Suffering from Cancer and for Their Relatives in Children Hematology Department » ( Germany)

    The project is implemented since 2004.

    The partners of the project are the following: the Ministry of the Land Baden-Wurttemberg, ”Help to the East Europe” Coordination Department and the evangelic man's society “Friends of Chernobyl Children”, Stuttgart, the Federal Republic of Germany.

    The aim of the project: development of the concept on rendering psychosocial help to sick children and their parents, development of criteria of psychosocial treatment and forms of therapy, equipping the office of the psychologist and a room of psychological support for children and their parents.

    7. ‘Rendering Psychosocial and Medical Care to the Children with Oncohematological Diseases’ (Germany)

    The project is implemented since 2005.

    The partner of the project: the Evangelic community of Alzey city of the Federal Republic of Germany;

    The aim of the project: training, experience exchange, training of experts in the leading clinics of Federal Republic of Germany, delivery of humanitarian shipments and medicines for children’s hematology department.

    In 2008 on the base of the Center there were held the following scientific conferences with international participation:
